Perhaps the two sites at the moment driving the biggest amount of traffic to websites - disregarding the major search engines are Stumbleupon and Digg.   To start off, lets introduce these two websites.

StumbleUpon - http://www.stumbleupon.com -

Channel surf the internet with the StumbleUpon toolbar to find great websites, videos, photos and more based on your interests. StumbleUpon learns what you like and makes better recommendations.

Digg - http://www.digg.com -

Digg is a place for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by our users.

However, the basic concept to remember before you use any of these sites is to make sure your website contains something that is usefull and interesting to the target audience.  If you dont have this concept stuck in your mind and put into practise throughout your website, then it is likely that Digg and Stumbleupon wont help you at all, as these two sites generate you traffic based upon user input.  Impress them, you get traffic.

Integration of Digg can be obtained by inserting their javascript integration code into your website.  If users like your webpage, they will “digg it” and the more diggs you obtain, the more exposure you will get on digg.com and thus more traffic.  Traffic from digg tends to be very dedicated and at that, valuable.  Traffic you should treasure.

Stumbleupon by default is integrated using a toolbar in your browser.  Users select their interests, and click the “stumble” button in their toolbar to bring up a random webpage of interest to them.  The algorhythm of stumbleupon is not really known, but - like digg, the more “thumbs up”, reviews and profile points you get for that webpage, the more traffic you are likely to receive.  Stumbleupon can drive a massive amount of traffic, but of low quality which hardly ever return.  There is even talk of stumbleupon prefetching pages before a user even views them, thus creating idealistically fake traffic.

Nonetheless, Digg and Stumbleupon are certainly marketing methods you should investigate and start using to drive that extra bit of traffic to your website.  It all helps.
