Creating a powerful, interactive, usefull website can be difficult. However, the open source combination that has been proven to be a success is that of phpBB + Wordpress. What are they? Well… a short description is below…oh - both software packages are free too…and for those “techies” out there, they run using a mySQL database and PHP scripting.
What is phpBB?
Since its creation in 2000, phpBB™ has become the most widely used Open Source forum solution. Like its predecessors, phpBB™ 3.0 “Olympus” has an easy to use administration panel and a user friendly installation process, which allows you to have a forum set up in minutes.
So there we have it - a forum that is ready and raring to go - invite friends, family, colleagues. In the ‘web 2′ world, a community is what it is all about - with a community, you will have a site that is almost guaranteed to last and run for a long time. To be honest, web 2 is all about making money with user generated content. Disagree? Say why in the comments section below.

Its all very well having a forum behind your site, but without decent content and a way to attract users using web2.0 methodologies, its pointless. I have talked about web 2.0 methodologies in the stumbleupon and digg marketing post. The way things are moving through the internet nowadays - blogs are the way to go. With solutions for pinging other blocks, tagging, categories and discussion features, native to Wordpress, it makes sense to use it. So do it. Dont think about it. Do it now.
WordPress is a state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. What a mouthful. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.
More simply, WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your blogging software, not fight it.
So, there you have it. Combine these two applications with:
You are ready and raring to go. Oh! Was it mentioned that this site was using the phpBB + Wordpress open source combination?

Great site, how did you integrate the two? WP-United or another package? We would love to do the same on our site, but WP-United is throwing wobblies.
On this site, I have the two installed completely seperately.
I found a wordpress skin I think is interesting, then applied skin changes to the phpBB3 template, which makes it look flawless
But if you have the two seperately a user has to login 2 times. They can register in your WP and if they want to post in the forum they must reg. one more time. How does this look from a user perspective as I would like to keep the seperately as well.
Usually users can tell that the two require different logins.
However, if you use Wordpress, you can integrate it into BBPress (from the same makers or WP). http://bbpress.org/
Features may be limited as compared to that of phpBB or vBulletin.
I just came upon this site today searching for phpbb3 and WP integration. It is very interesting what you did. I also did something very similiar, but it is not quite as ’seemless’ as what you have done here. Great job!
What I am looking for is some sort of integration, where any post I make to the front page of WP will appear as a thread in a designated phpbb3 forum post. Is this integration possible via some sort of plug-in for WP?
Hello Bing,
The plugin you speak of I’m not 100% sure exists, but it IS possible. After all, phpBB3 and WP are only databases of data. It is possible, with coding to cross code and make them work with eachother seemlesley.
There are lots of phpBB and WP guru’s out there, not a lot know both of them inside out, so I would advise investigation experience in both areas and examples of work before you ask for this plugin (commercial based). Otherwise, give it a try on the WP and phpBB forums - im sure somebody has come up with a beta / alpha solution for this.

I too found this site via a search on Google, but was hoping for a better solution. I too have set up my site, Mk3Love, with separate installations of both phpBB and Wordpress, but would love to integrate them all into one database so that users didn’t have to log in multiple times.
phpbb3 seo…
Great article! I always love reading the content up this website. Keep up the great work….
